Leadership works only when it is by example. Successful leaders have always those who led from the fronts, not those who sit in the comfort of their offices to give directives and wait for reports.
If President Buhari had acted like Governor Fayose today when he heard of the fire outbreak at Ijigbo, Ado Ekiti, by rolling his sleeves and trousers and moving swiftly to Agatu in Benue State or lately Southern Kaduna, those Nigerians that were killed by guardsmen would not have been killed.
You may argue that Governor Fayose did not put out the fire by himself, but his presence spurred the Fire Fighters into doubling their efforts and rallied the people to assist in promptly putting out the fire.
Now imagine President Buhari in Agatu, Benue State or Southern Kaduna immediately the killings started, all the Service Chiefs would have been there with him. That would have sent a strong signal to the killer herdsmen while also showing the security men that the President desired that they must stop the killings.
Thanks to those highly spirited Ekiti people that rallied to put out the fire today.
Most importantly, thanks to those men of the State Fire Service that responded promptly and worked very hard to prevent the fire from spreading beyond the level that it spread to.
And to our friends in the APC who went to rooftops to scream blue murder when three petrol stations were close down in Ado Ekiti in 2015 for being too close to residential areas, claiming that the petrol stations were shut because they belonged to APC members, I think you now know better.
God bless Ekiti State.
