Two years after the murder of Enugu lawyer Barrister Ejimofor Ozongwu, the search for justice by his family has met with serious road blocks, bumps and gallops, even as some of the prime suspects allegedly walk the streets freely with police protection.
In fact reports from the family suggests that some highly placed individuals from the community who were fingered in the murder, have adopted various strategies not only to frustrate the course of justice but also turn the complainants to accused persons.
In a recent press conference the Wilson Ozongwu family of Okwojo-Ngwo community cried out to the Inspector General of Police to intervene in the alleged harassment and intimidation of family members by the police from Force Headquarters.
Barr Ozongwu was murdered in December 2015 by some identified kinsmen, yet the police in Abuja, the family said, have turned around to make the Ozongwu family members subject of constant arrests and detention.
In the conference addressed by Ozor Eric Ozongwu the family lamented that men of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) stormed the family house at night, on Saturday (16/12/17) and whisked away one of them, Amechi Ozongwu who was preparing for the child’s dedication in church the next morning.
The family linked the arrest to the murder of their son, Ejimofor, alleging that, while the police in Enugu has done a good job arresting some of the suspects, ” the force headquarters has turned the complainant to accused.
“This harassment has been consistent, leading to Amechi’s arrest Saturday night. The SARS has taken him to Abuja yet the same police in Abuja provide security to one of the prime suspects. Each time he returns home from Abuja he is escorted by truck loads of policemen.
“They arrested Amechi because he is involved in the arrest of some of the suspects who are currently in prison custody and so they want to dampen our spirit with his arrest.”
Eric who reaffirmed the commitment of the family to see that those behind the murder of their brother were brought to book called on President Muhammadu Buhari and the Inspector General of Police to see that justice is not only done but seen to be done.
He expressed regrets that several petitions written by the family to the office of the Inspector General of Police were yet to receive attention.
